MONTVILLE, NEW LONDON COUNTY, 1940. Halfway between the cities of Norwich and New London rests Montville, pictured here, one of 21 towns in New London County. With a population of 4,135 in 1940, the town had experienced relatively consistent growth leading up to World War II.

MONTVILLE, WORKING CLASS, 1940. By 1935, almost 40 percent of the families inhabiting the town were foreign. Immigration played an important role in the development of Montville. Pictured here in front of his house is an anonymous French Canadian who was said to have worked in a paper mill in Montville for 11 years.
